He exposes discernment as a fundamental method for the synodal Church, which can be seen in his teaching since the beginning of this pontificate. The text comprises four parts. The first sets out short the general ecclesiological assumptions of the present Synod on synodality. The second shows spiritual discernment itself as a method throughout history, and the third the application of this method in the life of the Church in Francis’ teaching. The last focuses on the sensus fidei as the theological ground of the synodal discernment process.
